Questions answered

The things people ask us

Moving a home abroad raises a lot of questions. Here are the ones we hear most, answered plainly. If yours is not here, simply ask.

How does a move with Alexander Removals begin?

It begins with a survey. Tell us where you are moving from and to, and roughly what is coming with you, and a move coordinator will arrange a proper look at the property — in person or by video, whichever suits. From that we prepare a written scope and a clear, itemised quotation, so there are no surprises later.

Which European countries do you move households to?

We relocate UK households right across Europe. We hold dedicated route knowledge for Ireland, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden, and we regularly move families to France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and beyond. If your destination is not listed, ask — the network almost certainly covers it.

What does the written quotation actually include?

Your quotation sets out the handling standard, the packing and protection included, the transport arrangement, and anything specialist your inventory calls for. It describes what is covered and what could affect the final figure, rather than hiding conditions in small print. Where a customs inventory is needed, that is prepared with you.

How long will my move take to reach the destination?

Transit time depends on the route, the customs clearance involved, and how your load is scheduled with other moves heading the same way. Rather than quote a figure we cannot promise, your written quotation includes an estimated window for your specific move, and your coordinator keeps you updated as it firms up.

Do you pack for us, or do we pack ourselves?

Both are possible — it is the difference between our Essentials and Full-Managed standards. On Essentials you pack and we carry; on Full-Managed our crews pack, protect, transport and place everything for you. Fine and antique pieces are crated to a bespoke specification whichever standard you choose.

Can you store our belongings between homes?

Yes. Moves rarely line up perfectly at both ends, so we hold goods in clean, monitored storage for as long as you need — a short gap between completions or a longer wait while a home abroad is made ready. Everything is inventoried in and out.

What happens with customs and paperwork for a move abroad?

International moves need an accurate inventory and the right documentation for the destination. We prepare these with you, explain what each border requires, and coordinate clearance so your belongings are not held up unnecessarily. It is part of the managed service, not an afterthought left to you.

Are our belongings covered while in your care?

Appropriate goods-in-transit and liability cover is arranged for every move, and the options are set out plainly in your quotation and booking contract. Fragile, high-value and irreplaceable items are noted at survey so they are protected — and covered — to the right level.

Still have a question?

Ask us directly — no obligation. A move coordinator will give you a straight answer and, if you like, arrange a survey.
